Share Your Story: Cherry eye - prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid in the dog

From tammy oldfield

About my pet

Harley is my 13 week old AKC English Bulldog that we purchased from a reputable breeder for 2500.00 with according to her there has never been cherry eye with any of her puppies so you can see why we are so devastated with this situation. Harley was playing out in the yard when our son noticed his swollen red eye we rushed him to urgent care on Sunday at a cost of 350.00 to do eye stain antibiotics and dog collar. Follow up showed no improvement only to be told it was a condition known as cherry eye.

Options my vet gave us to fix cherry eye

Vet numbed eye and put back in place that only lasted 2 hours so now he is going to surgery next week.. oh my god. They did an eye stain to make sure there was no damage to cornea or ulceration..attempted to put back but popped out in 2 hours.. Now needs surgery explained he will suture not remove.

What I'd Do Differently

  • Be more informed about this condition. Urgent care vets treated as a traumatic incident not cherry eye could have saved a 300.00 visit to urgent care on Sunday and gone to regular vets office on Monday am. Amazing urgent care did not know it was cherry eye...

Janet Tobiassen Crosby, DVM, Veterinary Medicine Guide, says:

Sorry to hear about Harley. Things happen quickly with eyes. While cherry eye itself usually isn't an emergency, a corneal injury is, so it was good to have Harley checked out to be safe. Your regular vet and the surgeon doing the surgery can evaluate the other eye and the best course of preventative action.
