==================================
From Shelley:
I’m finally here – after spending the last 4 years working full-time and going to school to complete my veterinary pre-requisites, I move to East Lansing this weekend and start my classes at Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in a little over a week. It’s been a long 4 years but I am very excited to begin classes and start the next phase of my life.
A little bit about me
I’m in my mid-30s and I am changing my career from IT to veterinary medicine. About 4 years ago, the company I worked for decided to start offshoring IT work and I realized that it was only a matter of time before my job was offshored.
At that time, I decided to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. I was not good at science in high school so I started small –- one Intro to General Chemistry class at the local community college. Much to my surprise, I did very well and decided to try Biology I along with an Intro to Organic Chemistry class the following semester. I also did well in these classes and I continued completing my pre-requisites.
I transferred to a 4 year university for my upper level sciences and found that I really enjoyed the upper level biology classes I took –- a far cry from the girl who barely passed high school biology and swore she never wanted to do anything with biology again!
I am very fortunate to have a supportive husband and friends. I will be nearly 40 when I am done at Michigan State –- my husband tells me that I’m going to be 40 anyways so I might as well be 40 and doing something I love. I could not be where I’m at now without my husband and friends. I will miss them tremendously when I’m away at Michigan State –- fortunately, I live close enough to be able to come home on the weekends, just not close enough to commute.
What’s next?
I am moving to East Lansing this weekend to get to know my new roommate and get settled before classes begin. I’m excited yet sad –- excited because I am getting so very close to beginning to study something that I always wanted to study (but chickened out after high school) and sad because I have not lived separate from my husband for the past 10 years (good grief! Has it really been THAT long?).

Fortunately, I’ll be able to come home for a couple days before orientation – 8 days until orientation and 11 days until classes start. Am I really ready for this ride?
One last thing – as I’m watching the Olympics... GO USA!
