This is question five of a six-part interview with Geoff Tucker DVM, horse vet and dentist. Each question is featured here and each answer is (loosely) transcribed from Dr. Tucker's video response. At the end of each question, please visit the link to see the entire video response.

As I mentioned in question one, I "met" Dr. Tucker on Twitter. He very tech-savvy and is also active on Facebook. Learn how the Internet and these tools help his practice.

Question 5: How has social media such as Twitter helped you? your practice?

Answer: It's a great way to take your message out to the world and let them know what is going on. I have two agendas. Agenda number one, of course, is to earn a living. I don't think Twitter can help a lot of veterinarians that are localized in an area, such as a small animal practitioner with a 10-20 mile radius.

Twitter and Facebook can be overkill. But, on the other hand, Facebook is a great way for people to find out who the person is. I found a quote on Twitter than I had heard before: "A person will listen to you if they like you. A person will do business with you if they trust you." And that really struck a chord with me. (Agenda number two) Facebook and Twitter help people understand who exactly you are.

Social media has done a couple things for me. First, Twitter limits you to 140 characters per tweet. That makes you focus on what you need to say, which is a really good exercise. So personally it (Twitter) has helped me get my thoughts together.

As far as business goes, I think every business out there should have a Facebook or Twitter page. It allows them to connect with their people. It also allows them to find out what the world is thinking.

I do videos all of the time and put them on YouTube. I have actually gotten some business off of YouTube, Twitter and my web site. And if you guys don't have a web site, get one. Keep it simple. I think Twitter and Facebook are of paramount importance to anyone in business, especially veterinarians.
