It
is a fair assumption to say that most viewers of this site have experienced
the loss of a beloved pet (or pets) over the years. No matter how many
times you go
through this event, it is a difficult passage. The loss of life and
shared companionship bring about many feelings -

"The
sudden shock of pet loss is a frequent problem for veterinarians.
Getting owners to deal with their deep feelings of grief
can often be difficult, and I'm glad, as a veterinarian
that I now have a thorough resource that helps pet owners
to deal with their grief, without stigma, at their own pace
and in the privacy of their own homes."

even
feelings of our own mortality. Even when we are "prepared"
for the eventual loss of a pet, the actual loss can be shocking, scary
and "unplanned" emotions may arise. The audiobook, Journey
Through Loss, by Deborah
Antinori is a welcome and helpful tool - for pet owners and for veterinary
professionals trying to help pet owners through the grief of loss.
Deborah
Antinori wears many hats. From her web site biography:
"Deborah is a Registered Drama Therapist and Licensed Professional
Counselor with specialties in pet loss, drama therapy, hypnotherapy
(advanced clinical hypnotherapist) and expressive therapies. She is
also a certified EMDR practitioner (Eye Movement Desensitization and
Reprocessing). As director of therapy at the Davison Counseling Center,
she maintains a private practice of therapy where she works with individuals,
couples and groups." She is certainly well-qualified to have written
this book.
The
Journey begins
The tape begins with memories - how you acquired your pet and the
first memories you have of life together (good and not so pleasant!).
Antinori explains why such a deep loss can be felt after losing a pet,
and encourages the listener not to be "brave" or worry about
what people think. Losing a pet is losing a family member - one that
lived a part of your life with you, often spanning major events in your
life.
Antinori
shares her personal story of Yoko, her beloved Pekinese, and how they
started their life together along with her husband pet bird, Max. She
also offers tips on how to capture and preserve the early memories of
your pet.
