A
Day In The Life...
Learn
what a "typical" day is like working in a veterinary career
Part of a continuing series.

Life stories.
As the About.com guide to Veterinary Medicine, I frequently get emails
from students and those contemplating career changes asking what the veterinary
profession is like. There are many aspects to the veterinary profession,
and this week, an Animal Care Specialist in the US Army shares
what this career is like.
I'm 18 years old
enlisted in the Army. I'm an Animal Care Specialist for all branches
. Some people aren't even aware the military offers this.
Our main goal is
to treat all the military working dogs and to help prevent disease/injury
and educate the public about zoonotic diseases.
My day consists
of:
- running a clinic
to provide vaccines
- new puppy and
kitten visits
- anything "little"
-- such as anal gland expressions, ear cleaning and swabs, urinanalysis,
skin scrapes, etc.
Currently I'm based
on Oahu,HA. Being in the Army gives us great opportunity to do different
training. We are trained in small animal, we work on horses, cows, pigs,
goats, birds, rats, etc., and where I'm stationed, dolphins and whales.
The training is hard, but all the experience you gain is worth it.
THIS IS NOT A PROMOTION FOR THE ARMY - but this is my day as a vet tech
in the military.
- Chantal Savage,
Military Animal Care Specialist
Many thanks to Chantal for taking the time to share what a typical vet
tech day is like in the Army!
If you are a veterinarian, veterinary technician or student, please submit
your story and share what YOUR day is like -- it not only helps those
aspiring to be in a veterinary career, it serves to enlighten pet owners
just what goes on behind-the-scenes at a typical (or not-so-typical?)
vet clinic.
