Phenylpropanolamine, or
PPA for short, is used to treat urinary incontinence in dogs.
This drug was recently
removed from the human market (formally found in cold medications and dieting
aids) due to a potential risk for stroke in some women.
To date, there have not been any health warnings for animals on this medication. Despite being removed from the market, veterinarians and pet owners can still obtain this drug with a prescription at specialized pharmacies, called compounding pharmacies. These pharmacies make the drug as needed.
*As with any medication, please consult with your veterinarian about the proper and warranted use of the drug for your pet.*
