Salmonellosis is caused by a bacteria. There are many species of Salmonella bacteria. Salmonellosis affects all animals and is seen world wide.
The most common signs seen are enteritis (acute and chronic intestinal inflammation), and septicemia (also known as blood poisoning, where bacteria or bacterial toxins are found in the bloodstream). This is a zoonotic disease, and transmission from animals to humans occurs through ingestion of contaminated water or food.
