Pyotraumatic dermatitis, or "hot spots" are self-induced skin lesions that are usually caused (and made worse) by biting, licking, constant chewing or scratching. Hot spots are caused by surface infections, most commonly by bacteria. The hot spot can start with skin injury (even microscopic injury), moist skin folds, or insect bite(s) that cause the chewing, licking, biting that is characteristic of the hot spot cycle. Sometimes, no visible cause can be found.
