FDA Issues Health Warning for Humans and Pets -- Dog Chew Toy Alert

Friday April 6, 2007
In a story unrelated to the Menu Foods pet food recall, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on April 5, 2007 that the American Bullie dog chew toys may be contaminated with salmonella and warned consumers to stop using this product. This bacteria can cause illness in animals and in people. Signs to watch for include: vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and nauseousness.

Animals that are very young, old, or have compromised immune systems are most at risk. Dogs may become sick from chewing on and ingesting the contaminated chews, and humans may be contaminated by not washing hands or surfaces that come in contact with the chews; leading to contamination of human food or from direct contact (hands).

Potentially contaminated product:
American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy Chew and Dog Chews
This product is manufactured and distributed by T.W. Enterprises, Ferndale, Washington
Following is a list of the affected products:

  • A.B. Small Chew, small, 3-4 inch
  • A.B. Puppy Chew, 4-6 inch
  • A.B. Dog Chew Medium, 6 inch
  • A.B. Dog Chew Large, 10 inch
  • A.B. Dog Chew XL, 13 inch
  • A.B. Dog Chew Mega, 16 inch
  • A.B. Dog Chew Jumbo, 26 inch

Please realize that rawhide is treated wtih formaldehyde. This is the “normal operating procedure”. Please use Nylabone, Kongs, or expensive natural or organic bones or chews. Read the small print too. The label “American Made” is from Mexico. Please read all ingredients and labels! Thanks, BJ Matson, Director, Special Pets Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Iowa

This is all just so scary. I have 6 cats and a puppy all inside and I worry about them. I also feed dog and cat food to wild critters outside and worry about them also. All we can do is stay up with the recall list and pray that no more innocent animals die.
