I caught it!
- I have a 9 year old Min Pin. On a Friday she was pooping a lot inside & it was a little runny & she was throwing up but acted like she was fine. Playing, perky happy. I thought she had eaten something that didn't agree with her & her body was getting rid of it. On Saturday during the day she didn't eat but Saturday night she did & seemed fine. I went to work Sunday morning & when I got home there was blood all over my bathroom. It looked like an animal was slaughtered in there. It looked & smelled like death. I didn't know how she still had blood in her little body. I brought her to the ER vet, they put her on an IV & called me later to tell me she had HGE. She is still at the ER vet but I'm told she'll get to come home tonight. They have her on IV fluids & antibiotics & she's doing great. I want to say I feel sad for the people who lost their dogs to HGE but I also wanted to share a story where they lived because the vet had the quick thinking to put her on an IV.

HGE CAUSES
- My dog has Bee diagnosed with HGE and I posted earlier about the condition, as with all other comments, getting your dog to the vets ASAP is life or death. If your dog, like mine, has suffered milder symptoms previously (without blood loss) it IS most likely due to a food intolerance, wheat seems particularly bad, especially with chihuahuas who seem to get affected with HGE, it may be an idea to start your dogs on a healthier diet from now and avoid giving 'human treats' as we forget how sensitive their bellies can be! ID food comes highly recommended and is safe for your dogs diet. Maybe by changing our dogs eating habits we can actually prevent our dogs from getting this life threatening condition, after all, it's worth a go! I'm picking Bebe up from the vets later on today after 3 days on a i.v, we've all missed her terribly and her daughter Minnie is pining for her!

HGE
- My Chihuahua is at the vets with HGE since yesterday, she has had several mild cases of this in her 6 years and it does seem to boil down to food intolerance. It can be anything from chicken or wheat, some dogs are very sensitive, hopefully now we have finally diagnosed it we can try and make sure we eliminate the food that is a trigger for this condition. My heart goes out to all of you that have lost a pet or gone through this, it truly is the most awful condition.

my 3 year old with HGE
- Was alarmed beyond belief this morning when my fiancee told me how quick my Rottweiler fell to this condition (as I work away from home) I felt helpless and sure I was going to loose him, my vet said she was surprised he made it through the night. He was fine one minute then threw up then collapsed. It all happened within an hour. After 16 years in the breed, I had never heard of this condition. My vets are still treating him and has shown some signs of improvement, they were at a loss at first but gladly they found out what it was, I pray he will make it through the night, if in doubt get to a vet fast.

HGE in 5 year old Havanese
- Ginnie, our Havanese was just diagnosed with HGE. The vet is of the opinion as am I that she ingested something while momentarily out of sight in the yard. That night she vomited once, and had an accident in the house. Not much to worry about...life with a dog. Forty eight hours later, she began to vomit repeatedly, and developed diarrhea in the early morning hours. This morning, the vomiting stopped, but the diarrhea remained. We observed her to be listless, she refused food and water, and began to bleed anally. We called and immediately brought her to the vet where they found blood in both stool and vomit. She was by now hypothermic and in shock. Had we not brought her in, she likely would have died by the end of the day. I have just returned to work after speaking with the vet, and he believes her prognosis to be good. She will be at the veterinary clinic for the next couple of days though. It's going to be a difficult couple of days.

Pom had HGE
- Thursday our pom mix had diarrhea. She was perky and playful. I gave her boiled chicken and rice for dinner. She later vomited it up. 6:30am Friday morning she was vomiting blood and had bloody diarrhea. Rushed her to ER they did the proper blood work. She was positive for HGE. She spent the day and night at the hospital. Came home late Saturday afternoon and is doing great. I am afraid to let her out and about not sure how she contacted this. I never want this to happen again.

Hopeful for Spuddz
- My miniature dachshund Spuddz was diagnosed with HGE 2 weeks ago. The onset happened without any warning. He went to bed happy and playful around 11pm Tuesday night and woke up Wednesday morning to a large amount of vomit and bloody diarrhea. I immediately rushed him to the vet. He had a bloody bile movement in the vet's office and she immediately diagnosed him with HGE which was also proven once blood tests were run. He was treated with IV fluids, antibiotics, and a couple other meds. He bounced back somewhat but not 100% and just last night the diarrhea started again with little spots of blood. I am hoping to stop it before it gets totally bloody like before. I am trying at home treatment for now with pedilyte and kaopectate and lots of prayer. I will give him boiled chicken and rice tomorrow and hope he is able to keep it down. I feel awful for anyone that has to experience this with their little love one. This has not been easy watching my Spuddz go through this.

My 10 year old pit is suffering.
- My 10 year old pit bull is currently in the hospital recovering from HGE. I feel that I was lucky to catch it quick when I seen that she was vomiting up blood. She has been in the hospital for 3 days now and I hope to have her back tomorrow, the doctor said she was doing good but she just didnt want to eat. It has been killing me not having my dog here at the house with me, after having her for almost 11 years, she is just like a member of my family. To everyone out there this disease is no joke it will slowly destroy your dog and this is something you dont want to watch.

HGE disease
- We have a Sheltie who just developed the HGE disease. We never heard of this and she seemed so healthy. She was brought to the emergency vet on a Sunday morning and put on IV fluids. This is now Tuesday and she is not drinking water. My husband is now at our vet to be checked if she is getting sick again. Please pray for her recovery. We love our Shelby.

HGE
- I have a 2 year old min pin. Healthy dog, I have always kept up with shots and whatever else she has ever needed. One night she just would not stop vomiting and there was blood in it. So I called the emergency vet and they said to bring her in immediately. She seemed completely fine until the vomiting started then she started getting very dehydrated, then depressed, then bloody stool. It just happened so fast after the vomiting. They kept her overnight and started her on fluids and antibiotics intravenously. She got to come home after 24 hours. Now she's still on medicine and certain food that the vet gave us. It's just so scary how fast it happened and just to think what would have happened if we would have waited any longer to get treatment.

2 relaps of H G E
- Hi, My dog Maisey has had this 3 times now. She is a 3 year old Bichon this time we found 2 pools of blood on the floor rushed her to the emergency room. She is now recovering at home now. They think it is stress-related. One key thing wash your hands well humans can get this to. Our vet said this is way to close together for her to be having this 3 times within 3 months. It is hard when they are still so young.

very lucky
- Our precious 3 yr. old Shih-tzu/Pom mix Nikki started having a loose stool for 2 days with no other symptoms, then he started vomiting flem, then by 12:00 P.M. we noticed a bright red Jelly-like bloody stool. We rushed to an emergency vet and by then he had a all bloody stool and then vomited blood and water. The vet put him on IV's and ministered antibiotics. Almost immediately he stopped vomiting and had no diarrhea. We transferred him to our vet within 6 hours, onIV's for 6 more hours, his hemoconcentration with the PCV went from 67% to 43%(normal). We were told it rarely occurs in the same dog again. I'm going to research everything about it, knowing we could have lost our wonderful Nikki. Different Vets have different ideas obout this disease. This disease is very scary.

4 Year Old Yorkie
- My "Maggie" started with vomiting mucous with drops of blood in it. We monitored her and the next day her stools were extremely bloody. We contacted our vet but they were unable to see her that evening so I called around and found one that would. The Vet immediately suspected HGE and told us that it was a good thing we got her in ASAP. The cost was going to be steep but we didn't care, this was our little girl. She only spent one night at the vet hospital and within a day she was back to her normal, happy, loving angel. Please take your dog to a vet immediately if you see these symptoms. Immediate treatment is critical to save their lives. I had never heard of HGE before this happen but at least now I know what to look for. I thank the people out there who saved my Maggie and those who help all animals.

Black Lab - Rascal
- This HGE described nearly exactly what happened to my lab 2/21/09. One minute fine, the next minute vomiting food and defecating. Collapsed and went listless for 15-20 minutes. Seemed to recover slightly then had diarrhea, and kept trying to apparently pass something. 30 minutes late, the raspberry jam looking bloody diarrhea started. This was 1:30 am. By morning, he was gone, having lost a lot of blood. Never threw up blood, though. One minute his normal self, the next, not.

Poor Dude, we will all miss you.
- I am an instructor for managers in my corporation. My job occasionally requires me to travel. This week I flew out Mon morning, so I dropped my 6.5 yrs old Chihuahua (Dude) off Sun night at the kennel like I always did. They kennel called me Wed morning and said Dude had bloody stool in his cage (which he has never left stool in before). The lady at the kennel asked for my permission to take him to the vet (literally across the street). After I approved, she wrapped him in microwaved baby blankets and took him to the vet. 8.5 minutes later the vet called and told me that they tried to take his temp, but it triggered bloody stool and that before they could even start the IV, he passed away. The vet told me it was HGE and said that it is not known why dogs get it. That is why I searched the internet and found this site to see if I could get answers. He was healthy & playful before Wed. Dude was my best friend, child, and guardian. He will always be loved and missed.
