Share Your Story: How did your adopted pet change your life?

From Alison

How we met

Elsa, our border collie mix, quite literally showed up on our doorstep during a blizzard. She was around 6 weeks old and a little ball of fur. With the help of the shelter, we could not find her owners, but that was our good fortune.

Gretta, our golden retriever, came to us via the shelter. She was 6 and had been surrendered by a family who got new carpet and didn't want the hair in the house. How heartbreaking to be turned away from her family for such a poor excuse!

Heidi, our sheepdog mix, came to us via the shelter. She is 3-4 and was beaten severely. She is lucky to be alive.

How long we have been together

Elsa has been with us 12 years. She is now a senior and slowing down a bit, but she has been the best dog we could have ever asked for.

Gretta has bee with us nearly 5 years, so she is also a senior. She has been such a loyal dog, we could not ask for a sweeter animal.

Heidi has been with us for just a few months. She is very affectionate.

Advice

  • Stray and abandoned animals seem to bond to their owners so quickly. Love them and they will love you back.

Any behaviors that needed addressing post-adoption?

Heidi has severe separation anxiety. She was found in a foreclosed home left in a crate. She had been beaten severely and had numerous infected cuts and a broken hip. She is now terrified to be crated, alone, or in the dark. We are working with our vets to help her get through her fears.

What are some of your pet's funny antics?

Elsa is a talker! She "mouths off" about everything and makes the funniest noises.

Gretta likes to commando crawl and is constantly getting stuck under furniture she is too big to fit under.

How did your other pets react to the new adoptee?

Elsa and Gretta are fairly similar in age and manner, so they bonded quite quickly. They still aren't certain about Heidi, but try to engage her in play.

Janet Tobiassen Crosby, DVM, Veterinary Medicine Guide, says:

Wonderful stories and an extra hug to Heidi. Thank you for rescuing her and working with your vet to help her be comfortable and happy.
