Sophie the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Share Your Story: Cherry eye - prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid in the dog

From Sophie's Mom

About my pet

Sophie is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. We got her and her sister from the breeder. Her sister has shown no signs of cherry eye. Like another poster on here, Sophie's cherry eye came and went a few times before it stayed for good. Her first episode happened when she was probably 3 months old. She only has it in the one eye. We waited until she was old enough for spaying (6 months) to do the eye surgery at the same time. We had our regular vet do the surgery.

The cherry eye never disappeared. She also had a reaction to the sutures which caused her eye to cloud over.

Options my vet gave us to fix cherry eye

We could tack it, remove the gland or leave it. We chose to tack it.

Our vet also said it was just cosmetic, but I've watched it and it seems to get inflamed some days and just seems uncomfortable. I've also heard that there is a possibility of it getting injured. I'd rather not have her run the risk of causing major damage.

Removing the gland was really never something I entertained. The gland is necessary.

What I'd Do Differently

  • We are having it done a second time. This time we are going to University of Pennsylvania Ophthalmology department and having the first eye tacked again and the second pre-tacked.
  • If I knew what I know now, I'd have gone straight for the ophthalmologist to begin with.

Janet Tobiassen Crosby, DVM, Veterinary Medicine Guide, says:

Thanks for posting Sophie's story and I hope the second time goes as planned.
