About my pet

Chihuahua named Tinky - got her from the POUND three years ago. She was two at the time. She had the cherry eye when I saw her.

There were six people who had inquired about her and came to see her. When they saw her eye, they left.

They told me if she was not adopted by close of business she would be euthanized.

I called my vet right from the pound, who informed me she would charge me an additional $30 over the cost of spaying her to fix her cherry eye. Done deal! She has had no recurrence for over three years now.

Options my vet gave us to fix cherry eye

My vet said it needed to be corrected surgically, and that she had had this problem for a long time. She explained the operation to me, and we opted to have both eyes fixed under one general anesthesia. Since Tinky needed to be spayed, she was already going to have general anesthesia anyway. She explained she was going to tighten the ligament that holds the gland in place, as opposed to removing it, and she also told me if that didn't work, worst case scenario would be removal of the gland of the eye. We didn't have to have any more surgery done after the initial surgery.

What I'd Do Differently

  • nothing except to tell people that a cherry eye is NOT a reason to NOT adopt a great pet!
  • Tinky knows over 165 words and phrases and has been the joy of my life!

Great story, thanks for sharing, Sue. I totally agree about adopting - kudos to you to for looking past the cherry eye to give Tinky a wonderful life!
