Additional comments about this food

I home cook for my dogs. I vary their meat, whole grains and veggies and they get low fat PLAIN yogurt everyday, sometimes a bit of banana or apple. I also supplement with Professional Missing Link.

My Review

You have to vary the meats, grains, veggies etc... It is not hard at all to do. You just have to follow some guidelines but once you learn how I bet you will love it. I know your dogs will! . I have read many books and found one with the basics for dietary needs for dogs and cats. The table in my book is actually taken from a nutritionist at Hills Science. It basically says that dogs of 40lb's need 4 oz of grain, 2 oz of meat, 2 oz of veggies, 1/4 teaspoon of salt substitute( potassium chloride) and one adult human multi vitamin. That's what goes into all their food. They just vary it for different markets. I have used this as a guide but tend to cut back the grain and add more meat sometimes. I also do not give synthetic vitamins. I do add high quality oils for skin and coat. Don't believe the hype that it's so 'complicated' to feed your dogs yourself. You just have to be consistent with a formula, give them some variety , use the best ingredients you can and keep an eye out for allergies and weight issues. Also watch out for some of the recipes on the web. A lot of them are not by experts in the field and some foods are REALLY DANGEROUS to dogs. Ask your Vet for a good veterinary nutritionist if you’re not sure or get some good books. Just check the credentials of the author of any books you may read. This is a growing market and there will always be people out there who will claim to be experts but don't have any education or experience to back it up. Be careful and have fun!
