From Jen:
Vet School Diary

Hi! I'm Jen, and I'm about to return to school to with a goal of becoming a Registered Veterinary Technician. I am 37 years old, married, with two girls, ages 9 and 11. I have a bachelor's degree in an unrelated field, so I will be earning an associate's degree from an accredited vet tech program in order to take the RVT exam and become registered in California. Thankfully, I do not have to repeat (or pay for) any general education courses, since I already completed all my general education classes yeeeears ago.

Like many young kids, when I was little, I wanted to be a veterinarian. I "saved" wounded animals (birds, baby rats, etc.), and tried to nurse them back to health. Recently, I had six 6-week old kittens that I cared for for three weeks, before finding homes for them. One we kept, then we got two more back - long story - and are keeping those as well. They were very sick with conjunctivitis and upper respiratory infections when I caught them (momma is feral). We also have two dogs (one is a puppy my dh rescued from a parking lot), one rabbit, two rats, two hermit crabs, and a goldfish.

This Monday (June 22nd), I will be going to my school's Vet Tech party. It's basically a kick-off for the school's new vet tech students, and a day to meet the other incoming students (probably all a lot younger than me - lol!). Then next Monday will be orientation, then the following Monday (July 7th), is the first day of class! Classes are 7:30 am to 1:00 pm, M-Th, but I will be able to leave early whenever the group starts working on general ed. classes. I'm going to a private, 18-month, year round program. I looked into the (less-expensive) community college program nearby, but found that I would need to take two science pre-requisites before starting the program, which would delay entry by an entire year! Also, the private college is 1/2 hour closer, and the hours of instruction are set in stone for the whole 18 months, so I won't need to juggle my life around every semester when my classes change. With two kids in school and a hubby working long hours, that was important. It was a TOUGH decision, but I think it will work out fine.
