A Day In The Life

Pet Care Technician in a Small Animal Hospital

From Sarah Coy, for About.com

I work for a small animal hospital, with one full time doctor, and two part time doctors. We are a very busy hospital and our full time doctor is a wonderful surgeon. Therefore, we always have at least 20 surgeries a day. We never know from day to day what emergencies will arise. Broken legs, HBC (Hit By Car injuries) and numerous other emergencies.

I have worked my job for 12 years, and to me, there is no other job on earth that could match the feeling that I have when I leave work every day.

It is not an easy job, by far, it is very tiring, and brain melting. But it is the most satisfying job that I could ever have.

On a busy summer day, we usually have at least 20 animals in the hospital for treatments. Anything from Parvo virus to a simple UTI (Urinary Tract Infection).

If you are considering a career in this field, please keep in mind that it's not about "playing" with the animals, it is about getting them well and pleasing their owners. This job can be overwhelming at times, but there is no other job to do if you don't mind getting bitten, dragged across a room by a 200 lb Rottweiler, smelling like a sewer... etc. It helps to have wonderful people to work with and good rapport with the veterinarians.
