A Day In The Life

A Career As An Animal Care Worker

By Janet Tobiassen Crosby, DVM, About.com

I work as an Animal Care worker in a large dog and cat boarding kennel.

A typical day starts off with a staff meeting at 7:45 am. We review all the pets going out or coming in, and decide where they will be kept, as our facility has several different sections. We also review any other important events such as vet appointments, client visits, or employee notes. After that, I take out all the dogs in the section for older, less active, or sick pets. They are kept in a quieter area. The remainder of the large dogs are kept in the kennel. While the dogs are out, I clean out the cages, change blankets, change water bowls, and start laundry. Then I feed everyone, and administer any medications. These range from pills to eye/ear drops, or even hydrotherapy! By then, it's usually time to clean and disinfect the kennel. After that, I take the dogs out again and eat lunch.

After lunch, I start play times with the boarders. Play times are an extra option that clients pay for; it's 30 minutes of supervised play alone or with another dog. I match up dogs hat I think will be compatible if the client says the dog is good with other dogs. I usually do that for most of the afternoon, along with dishes and general cleaning. At 5pm, I start the nighttime feeding. After feeding, I administer meds, and take the dogs out again.

Then at 7:00 pm I tuck everybody in, turn out the lights, and go home to my bed!
