The Vet School Diaries were started in 2001 by Joanne, a student preparing for her freshman year at Cornell. Joanne has since graduated and continued her studies as a veterinary intern, giving vet school hopefuls and the general public a glimpse of what it is "really" like in vet school. The Diaries have continued to grow with many other pre-vet, veterinary and veterinary technology students contributing from around the world. In this article, read Maren's opening post as she prepares to apply for entry into the University of Missouri-Columbia veterinary school next fall.
From Your Guide:
I would like to welcome new Diary Writer - Maren!
Maren is currently completing her third year of her masters degree in biology at the University of Missouri. She has also earned two undergrad degrees in biology and religious studies. Maren will be applying for entry into the University of Missouri-Columbia veterinary school next fall. She is planning on a career in either a mixed practice vet and/or a veterinary behaviorist or a zoo vet.
If YOU are in veterinary school or will be starting a school program for veterinarians or veterinary technicians and would like to start a similar diary, please see this thread for more information:

From Maren:
I'm a 24 year old pre-vet graduate student at the University of Missouri. I'm working on the last semester of my master's degree in biology on the effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals on the reproductive system of mice. I got my undergraduate degrees in biology and religious studies at the University of Missouri and I am applying to the University of Missouri's College of Veterinary Medicine for entry in fall 2007. I guess I sure do love Mizzou! I just got I have four years of laboratory research experience, so I can answer some questions on that as well as grad school if anyone is considering a PhD instead of a DVM. I've shadowed with several small animal vets, a mixed practice vet, several lab animal vets, and a zoo vet.
I'm pretty active on the About.com Dog Park forum and one of my part time jobs is doing dog behavioral consulting. I really enjoy studying dog behavior, ethology, and training. Unfortunately, Mizzou doesn't have much in the way of behaviour courses at the vet school, so I'll be on the lookout for internships after I graduate to be a veterinary behaviorist. I love variety in my work, so would like to also be a mixed practice vet with dedicating some hours for veterinary behavior work.
I have quite a few pets: Zoso (Belgian Malinois), Strider (Aussie mix), Buck (husky/Rottie mix), Tiger (goldfish), Walker (ferret), Eowyn, Nieva, and Galadriel (rats), Sheila (jungle carpet python), Severus (boa constrictor imperator), and a husband named Sam! Zoso and I train in Schutzhund and we'll also probably start agility soon.
And yes, people can ask me questions or post comments or whichever.
