Suggested Reading"Glossary Term: Prandial"Definition: Pronunciation Key: Pran-de-al
The term prandial means "of or relating to a meal"1. This word is derived from the Latin "prandium", meaning late breakfast or lunch. It now refers to any meal; breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack2. Veterinarians often use the term post-prandial, as in post-prandial hyperglycemia, the rise in blood sugar that is seen after ingestion of a snack or meal. Post prandial walks or other exercises must be done with caution, since it is not healthy for pets or humans to exercise on a full stomach. Dogs may be at increased risk for a condition called bloat if exercised close after a meal, but the exact cause of this condition is unknown (more likely a combination of factors). For pets battling with obesity, exercise suited to their physical condition and overall health is a key factor, in combination with reducing calories and eating a healthy diet. Please see your veterinarian for an appropriate weight loss regimen and diet for your pet before initiating any changes to the diet or lifestyle of your pet.
