This is a condition where one or both testicles fail to appear in the scrotum after birth. The term "crypt-" means hidden or secret and "orchi-" refers to testicle. During fetal development, the testicles move from deep in the abdomen out through the groin area (inguinal canal) into the scrotum by 12 weeks of age in the dog and cat. This is a heritable trait. While affected animals may still be fertile, they should be castrated to prevent passing on this gene.
