Administration of Heartgard®
Heartgard® is administered orally, and is given monthly.
Precautions
- Collies and some related breeds, along with some other individual dogs, have a genetic sensitivity to ivermectin. The doses of ivermectin used in Heartgard® are low enough to be considered safe even for sensitive dogs; however, common sense dictates that ivermectin should be used cautiously in breeds or dogs known to be sensitive. Other heartworm preventatives that do not contain ivermectin are available, and the choice of heartworm preventative should be discussed with your vet.
- For use in dogs and cats 6 weeks of age and older.
- The manufacturer recommends testing dogs and cats for heartworms prior to beginning treatment with Heartgard.
Side Effects
According the the product monograph, possible side effects include: depression, lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, dilated pupils, incoordination, staggering, convulsions and hypersalivation (excessive drooling). As with any medication, the risks and benefits should be discussed with your vet, and any side effects reported to your vet immediately.
