Pet Food Recall: Rethinking Pet and Human Food Choices

Taking a look at all of the ingredients

By , About.com Guide

April 2007

I have been reading as much as I can on the pet food recall, as I am sure many pet lovers have. The volume of news is at times overwhelming. With news of the possibility of tainted food extending to human food, I feel that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Rethinking where and who we buy our food from, for pets and for people, is the hot topic right now. This in itself causes stress, as so many wonder what IS safe? I was shopping for cat food today, and after stopping at four different stores, I left discouraged. The shelves were full of notices proclaiming: "we only have safe foods on our shelves" but I found many empty spaces on the shelves between the notices.

The food products that have been recalled were recalled because of familiar, necessary(?) and common ingredients. As I continue with my reading on recalled foods, I am finding that it is because they are ingredients; they tend to slip past import regulations much easier than other items such as meat, which has rigorous inspection procedures.

These insidious ingredients are in so many foods -- for pets and for people. In my opinion, now is the time to educate ourselves about what is on food labels and think more seriously about purchasing locally from known sources.
