VALLEY CENTER, Calif. -- (Oct. 1, 2004) The National Animal Supplement Council is an industry group dedicated to protecting and enhancing the health of companion animals and horses throughout the United States. NASC was formed in 2001 when the multibillion dollar animal supplement industry was threatened by a complicated and erratic regulatory environment.

On behalf of all stakeholders, NASC is actively working with federal and state regulators from the Food & Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine and the Association of American Feed Control Officials for nationally consistent, fair and responsible regulation. Over the past three years, NASC successfully initiated several goals for the industry through its CompliancePlusSM program (see fact sheet below), which provides a framework of best manufacturing practices for quality assurance, risk assessment/management and a commitment to ongoing research. These developments stand alone in the industry.

The first four significant accomplishments are:

  • 1. Standardize the industry with a structure for consistent product labeling that is consistent with the intended use of the product.
  • 2. Establish consistent Quality Systems Requirements to help ensure production process controls.
  • 3. Conduct extensive review of all ingredients used in the industry and develop a database of definitions and potential risk factors. In addition, facilitate and fund ongoing research for ingredients to ensure continual vigilance for both products and ingredients.
  • 4. Initiate and maintain an adverse event reporting system, of which the FDA has complete access, something not even done on the human side of the supplement industry. NASC members represent about 65 percent of the multibillion dollar animal supplement industry, and the current database consists of more than 300 million administrations of various supplement products.
  • Following successful independent facilities audits that began in late 2004, NASC members that have demonstrated compliance with NASC quality requirements may use the NASC Quality Seal on their product labels. The Seal is a way for consumers to know that when they buy a product, they buy from a reputable company that focuses on product quality. Buying from NASC members is the best way consumers can support efforts to improve the quality of animal supplements and preserve the availability of quality supplements in the United States market.

NASC is committed to ensuring the continued availability of high quality supplements for non-human food chain animals and holding member companies accountable for supplying only those supplements that are in compliance with NASC guidelines and properly labeled products. For more information or to review the extensive member list, go to www.nasc.cc or call (760) 751-3360.
