In horses, lactating mares release substances referred to as "appeasing" pheromones, which relax and reassure their foals. Research has shown that horses recognize these pheromones throughout life. When a horse recognizes these pheromones through their nasal passage, a message is sent to the brain that helps to ease the animal's apprehension.
