Bo usually sits next to my tech when she's doing dentals because he likes the taste of the polish and he's hoping for some to fly off the polisher. He enjoys going to schools and most recently helped me with a program called "Girl Power" -- teaching young girls how to do heart rates and respiratory rates on dogs. He goes with me everywhere, along with his two brothers, and is usually sitting at the front door in the morning to go to work. He's been punching the clock since day one.
Mastiffs are called Gentle Giants and for a good reason. They look intimidating but in reality they're big babies. Small dogs are always the aggressors with a mastiff cowering. The Frenchie is already the boss! The breed is an old one, and had many uses: they fought with the gladiators, they were used for bear hunting, and they are estate guards in England. The breed was almost extinct and then made a come back to day they're couch potatoes.
They really don't need alot of space. I tell people just a lot of couch. I always tell my clients to obedience train because you can't outmuscle them. They are the heaviest breed, but not the tallest. The English Mastiffs are the largest, averaging 200 pounds for the males and about 170lbs for the females. They have large litters of 8 to 10 puppies, although Kubota was only 1 of 2 and many usually need c-sections.
Photo at right: Bo celebrates his buddy Buford's 7th birthday with a "cake" made of cooked hamburger, veggies, eggs, and bread crumbs.
Thank you, Terri for this wonderful story of Kubota (Bo) the Mastiff! Best wishes at Westminster in 2008.
