Artificial knee in a cat

Cyrano the Cat, a large orange tabby who survived bone cancer one year ago, received the first known total knee replacement in a cat at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine. This surgery was a team effort; veterinary surgeons, engineers and implant manufacturers all worked together to create a strong knee that was small enough to fit a cat.

This artificial knee is also interesting because it is an osseointegrated implant. As Cyrano heals post-operatively, the bone actually grows into the implant. This creates a strong bond so the joint can perform optimally.

From David Green, Director of Communication for the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University:

"[This implant is a] custom-made, osseointegrated prosthetic knee implanted in Cyrano’s leg. You can see the extension into the live bone on either side of the prosthetic knee."
