Itchiness in pets can be due to many reasons, but most commonly can be attributed to parasites (fleas, mites) or allergies. Unlike humans, environmental or food allergies often manifest as itchy skin and ears. Add to that licking, biting, chewing and scratching, and skin infections can develop, worsening the itching. It can be a vicious cycle. What was the cause of your pet's itchiness, and what finally helped bring comfort?

12. Glossary Term: Pruitus

If your pet shows signs of pruritus; scratching, chewing, licking and / or biting at the skin, feet or ears, please see your veterinarian to diagnose the cause and get some relief for your itchy pet.

13. Glossary Term: Psychogenic Alopecia

Hair loss from stress and subsequent overgrooming is commonly referred to as psychogenic alopecia. The word psychogenic means "originating in the mind" and the word alopecia means hair loss or baldness.

This condition is more common in cats, particularly in the "nervous" personality types.
