Discovering a lump on your pet is often a scary finding. The first thing to do is make an appointment with your vet for help in determining what the lump may be, especially if your pet is lethargic, in pain, or bothering the lump. If your vet says to "watch the lump" for growth, what is the best way, without worrying daily?

My friend, mentor and veterinary pathologist shared this tip with me years ago, and it is is one I have recommended to clients, friends and used on my own pets.

Lump Monitoring Tip:

  1. Take a piece of wax paper and a felt marker.
  2. Lay the wax paper over the lump.
  3. Trace the outer edges of the lump.
  4. Date the wax paper.
  5. Repeat monthly (or shorter intervals, if your vet suggests) to monitor.
I have also used plastic wrap for larger lumps. Both wax paper and plastic wrap are easy to write on and date using a permanent marker.
