Cassidy the Dog with a Prosthetic Limb

Pioneering surgical technique from NC State College of Veterinary Medicine

By

From the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine: "Cassidy, a three-legged German shepherd mix owned by Steve and Susan Posovsky, has become a medical pioneer after being fitted with a prosthetic limb that was created through a process that could one day benefit humans who lose limbs through accidents or disease."

This story is a followup to Bailey the cat, the first pet at NC Veterinary College to receive a prosthetic limb.

Cassidy didn't always have it so good. He was found wandering the streets of New York in 2005, underweight and missing a leg. A television program spotlighted his story, and Steve Posovsky was moved to contact the shelter and adopt Cassidy.

In searching for a facility to help Cassidy gain more strength and mobility by using all four legs instead of three, he found the veterinary team at North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine. Cassidy was the first dog to receive this type of prosthetic leg at NC State in 2008. Learn more: Cassidy's full story (PDF).
