Week 25 Progress Report
I kept to the two-day-on, one-day-off schedule for prednisone, which kept them fairly symptom-free for the most part. However, by the end of this week Simba was breaking out quite badly with sores over his back. The sores were what would be described as pustules, I suppose – they started out as fluid filled bumps that quickly broke open and then scabbed over. Even with his newly thickened coat of fur on his back, these sores make him look really "bumpy." I consulted with Dr. G. and we decided a three week course of antibiotics would be a good idea for him. Asia was looking quite good, though.
Week 26, 27, and 28 Progress Reports
Within the first week of starting the antibiotics Simba’s sores improved quite well, and he looked good again. A couple of times I tried going back to prednisone every other day, but both dogs got quite itchy again, especially Simba. Even with 2-days-on-one-day-off prednisone Simba would rub his face at least once a day, but the face rubbing was more frequent and prolonged if I dropped the prednisone at all from that schedule. During these three weeks, they also both had short bouts of itchiness and mildly reddened skin, but typically bounced back with their next dose of prednisone. They were still on Hill’s d/d Salmon and Potato, and Simba continued his antibiotics. No further plans were made for testing; we were just coasting for a while and trying to catch our breath.
