I recently decided to give Feliway® diffuser and spray a try with my own cats. Feliway is a pheromone-based diffuser to aid in behavior modification. For more information about this product, please see the Veterinary Q & A - Feliway® article.

You can find some viewer's opinions of Feliway® in the Veterinary Q & A - Feliway® article, and here are some additional comments.

From T. Bryerton:
Our group - Friends of Nevada County Animals in Grass Valley, California, operates an adoption center that houses cats and kittens once they have been through our quarantine and spay/neuter process. Some of the adults we recently had there had been on site for 1-2 years. Earlier this year, before kitten season got under way, we began using the Feliway wall diffuser plug-in to try to manage the behavior of some of the adults.

We had one or two (male/female) who would eliminate inappropriately and one (female) who was caught spraying in various areas of the facility. Our experience showed us that in some cases, the behaviors had a medical basis, while in others it was clearly behavioral. Before the introduction of the Feliway diffuser, we had one animal euthanized when his aggression and elimination practices became a liability/problem, while the other animals have since been adopted.

However, once the product was introduced -- and before kitten season got under way (major stress factor for the non-parenting adult cats), there was substantial improvement in the other behaviorally challenged adults. This included two who had come to us as kittens with attitude problems and with whom we had been working for the entire two years they were there.

All of the difficult animals became more approachable between 4-5 weeks after we began using the product. Our facility is a total of 833 square feet. We used one diffuser in the main room and one for the smaller get-acquainted room.

From L. Davis
Used Feliway® spray for several months for a 7 year old male neutered cat who had a spraying problem. It really didn't work, as he sprayed all over the place not one area in particular. You must do it every day. Purchased the diffuser and used that in a bedroom where he stayed most of the day. That worked quite well in there. The rest of house, you must use several for them to work effectively.
