(Thankfully with a happy ending) My sister lived in the desert of Arizona. Many of the people in her area have a low respect for animals. Here is a story of a dog's nightmare as told to her by the dog's previous owner. He became mad at his dog one day because he thought she was pregnant. He put her in a plastic garbage bag, put her in the back of his pick up truck, drove into the desert, put the bag on the ground, and fired at the bag (and the dog) with his gun. He admitted he could not look and turned his head when he fired. Several days later the dog had found her way back to my sister's house. She had eaten her way out of the bag, was only grazed by the bullet, and sat at my sister's door with a sense of knowledge of her love of animals. My sister immediately took the dog, cared for her, and helped her with the birth of her puppies, one of which lived. My sister has had the mother and her pup for the last several years. Except for a terrific fear of garbage bags and occasional seizures during very loud noises (thunder, firecrackers) the mother is healthy as is her son. (Since that time, my sister has provided health care for numerous neighbors' dogs. She offers to pay for and transport the dogs for spaying and neutering as well as routine shots. The neighbors gratefully accept her offers. She has also found homes for a few unwanted dogs, carefully screening the families before matching them with their new pets.)
