Camping Stories

Camping with a dog and cat
by Sheri Stritof
Guide to Marriage at About

We've taken a lot of trips and camped with both a large dog and a cat.

We discovered, that just like kids, dogs and cats need to stretch their legs and go potty a lot while on the road.  So we made it a point to stop at every rest area that came along.

We would have the kids do laps around the area while we walked the critters. Cats don't like harnesses and leashes, but they get used to them eventually. People used to give us strange looks as we walked along with a cat hunched down on her belly because she didn't like the feel of the harness.  We discovered that a "H" design harness is harder for a cat to slip out of, too.  Oh, and don't tie a cat near a tall tree.  It takes awhile to climb the tree, disengage a tangled leash and cat, and maneuver safely back down the tree.

Having a litter box for the cat was useless.  She never used it.  In fact, on one trip, she even refused to relieve herself outside for several days. We found some soft dirt along the side of the road, put her in it, and moved her paws around in it... she finally got the message.

We kept both critters inside our motor home at night.  We were worried that larger animals like bears would be tempted to check out the dog or cat.
