Global
Approach
The
web is an excellent tool for getting information out and available to
the masses. In the veterinary world, this is often in the form of valuable
health information for pet owners and alert information, such as legal
issues or campaigns for animals.
Many shelters
and humane organizations are getting online
to tell the public what animals are available for adoption, health information,
and other volunteer tasks or monetary help necessary to keep their organization
working.
What Can
I Do To Help?
It can be overwhelming to see web sites and hear repeated news stories
that tell about animals in need. Abuse, neglect, overpopulation, puppy
mills, and unwanted strays -- the problems are so large in scope that
the thought of helping these animals seems impossible.
Think
Local
For those of you wanting to get some hands-on help to animals, start by
checking out your local community. Following are some ways to make a difference
in the lives of animals.
Shelters
and Humane Societies
Animal humane organizations are forever in need of your help.
Many accept donations of pet food and supplies, blankets, and other pet
items, in addition to monetary donations. This can be done locally or
on the web.
Another way
to donate is time -- time spent with animals awaiting adoption (walking,
providing human contact) and caring for the animals is time well spent!
Human socialization is an important factor in making the animals more
adoptable.
