I am a person
who works in a veterinary clinic and does all the things a certified
technician would do. My next step is to become certified through
one of the recent online courses supported by the AVMA. I
work in a mixed practice of predominately small animal/exotics in
Rome, Georgia.
My typical day
begins early in the morning with:
- medicating
patients brought in during the night
- checking
in new patients
- compiling
records to begin the day
My job juties
involve everything that makes a veterinary practice run. I am trained
to be a:
- receptionist
- assistant
- kennel attendant
- grief counselor
- obtaining
samples (blood, urine, feces) and doing the appropriate labwork
- surgical
prep
Drain placement
and wound suture are my favorites. I enjoy working emergency cases
because of the fast paced environment. I routinely assist with exotics
in examination rooms and in anesthesia with all animals. I all also
enjoy x-ray too. My team of four doctors is great. They really do
alot to help me learn and practice honing my skills. I can't wait
to apply myself to the vet tech program for the sense of accomplishment
it will give me. I truly do everything but diagnose, operate and
dose!

Many thanks to Mandy for taking the time to share what a typical vet
tech day is like at her clinic!
If you are a veterinarian, veterinary technician, student, or other pet-related
career professional, please submit your story
and share what YOUR day is like -- it not only helps those aspiring to
be in a veterinary career, it serves to enlighten pet owners just what
goes on behind-the-scenes at a typical (or not-so-typical?) vet clinic.
