A Day in the life...

An Evening at The Animal Emergency Clinic
by Susan, Veterinary Technician

Hello, my name is Susan. I am the Supervising Veterinary Technician at The Animal Emergency Clinic in Grand Terrace California.

Our evening always starts out with a bang. We see everything from animals who have been hit by cars all the way down to a 'simple' ear infection. We can see up to 30 cases in one weekday evening and even more on the weekends.

Our staff is a very dedicated team. We are willing to give up our evenings, weekends, and holidays to assist our animal companions. There isn't a thing that we technicians cannot do. We are our Doctors right hand, or should I say third hand. They depend on us greatly. We take a great load off so they can see more patients or go in on an emergency surgery.

For example, we do quite a bit of c-sections, exploratory surgeries, and GDV (Gastric-Dilatation-Volvulus) surgeries. This evening we did two c-sections and an exploratory on a Doberman that chewed up and swallowed a pair of his owner's underwear.

My job consists staffing the hospital and arranging their schedule, purchasing all of the supplies, assisting in anesthetics and surgery, placing I.V. catheters, drawing blood, radiology, lab work and numerous other things.

It is never-ending at our clinic and a great place to learn and observe. If you are interested in being a Veterinary Technician, the Emergency field is the best place to be. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Many thanks to Susan for taking the time to share what an evening in an emergency clinic is like.
