Army Animal Care Specialist (91T10)
by Jamie Sue Shomaker(PV2)
(Note from Jamie: This is not a promotion for the Army,
it is just another of many options a person has to be a vet tech.)

I guess I should not have said army. I do not only work with the army. Just at my duty site. I work with all services, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Reservists and Army.

We are the only Animal Care Specialists in the military. I work in a full service clinic at Ft. Irwin (California). We have the capability of servicing problems from a cough up to broken and shattered bones. It depends on our vet -- if our vet feels comfortable with the procedure we do it.

Just last week; We attempted to stop a dog's bone cancer early by amputating his front left let. He so far is showing no signs that the cancer has spread! We administer shots, run blood analyses, urine and fecal analyses, and scrub in to help the vet during surgery (serving as extra hands to clamp, cut, sew).

We also run a stray facility. We consider our stray facility more of an adoption facility because we attempt to adopt out any animal out that we can, and do as few euthanasias as humanely possible.

We also work alongside the food inspectors -- learning their job and helping the community and the deployed soldiers. At my site, we help the deploying soldiers a lot by inspecting their food and making sure it gets to them safely.

That is just a part of an Animal Care Specialist in the Army.

Many thanks to Jamie for taking the time to share what a day as a tech in the armed service veterinary office is like.

If you are a veterinarian, veterinary technician, student, or other pet-related career professional, please submit your story and share what YOUR day is like -- it not only helps those aspiring to be in a veterinary career, it serves to enlighten pet owners just what goes on behind-the-scenes at a typical (or not-so-typical?) vet clinic.
