A Day in the life of A...

I work for a busy equine referral hospital in northeastern Ohio. We are a 24-hour emergency facility along with service to routine clientele.

We currently have 6 doctors on our staff which include two boarded surgeons and one boarded in internal medicine. We have 3 registered technicians and 20 lay staff. I have worked for this hospital as a tech for 11-1/2 years.

The techs share all of the duties, but we also have areas that we specialize in within our practice. I am the senior surgery tech as well as the senior tech of the entire practice. Our other two techs are responsible for any anesthesia performed in our facility. Because we are a referral hospital, we get to see a lot of interesting cases. We perform a lot of surgery, including colic and orthopedic cases. In the Spring our hospital is full of sick mares and foals.

I absolutely love my job and couldn't imagine doing anything else!

Many thanks to Mindi for taking the time to share what a day as a tech in a small veterinary office is like.

If you are a veterinarian, veterinary technician, student, or other pet-related career professional, please submit your story and share what YOUR day is like -- it not only helps those aspiring to be in a veterinary career, it serves to enlighten pet owners just what goes on behind-the-scenes at a typical (or not-so-typical?) vet clinic.
