My morning starts
out around 7:30, I walk into work and prepare myself for the day
to come.
I usually walk
through the hospital and check out any patients who may have been
admitted the night before and look at their status. I get them out
and do a quick exam and leave them out for the doctors to write
up their treatments after they have examined them.
My fellow technicians
are doing the same or may be pre-oping animals who are getting surgery
that day. We are usually running around doing treatments, getting
animals anesthetized and prepped for surgery along with getting
boarders ready to go home and answering buzzes from the doctors
who are seeing appointments and need help in the rooms. A
lot of times there are animals who are admitted that morning who
may be sick or we need to do x-rays, or blood work on.
Sometimes we
are so busy that we forget to stop and sit for lunch.
We are very
involved with doing dentals and work with a specialist who comes
in one day a week and does major dental work on dogs and cats such
as root canals, crown preps, placing brackets in a dogs mouth to
an animal who needs several extractions. The
technicians are very involved with their dental from cleaning to
charting the mouth to taking x-rays.
Some days feel
like they are never going to end but I can go home that night thinking
about how I saved that animals life who may have been dieing to
giving my all to each and every animal that stepped into the hospitaland
making their life better!

Many thanks to Jess for taking the time to share what a day as a large
animal vet assistant is like.
If you are a veterinarian, veterinary technician, student, or other pet-related
career professional, please submit your story
and share what YOUR day is like -- it not only helps those aspiring to
be in a veterinary career, it serves to enlighten pet owners just what
goes on behind-the-scenes at a typical (or not-so-typical?) vet clinic.
