Pet Vacation I own a male Sulfur Crested Cockatoo who had just been diagnosed with a crop infection and I had been told he may have Beak and Feather Disease. I had been told to keep him warm and to give him daily antibiotics. At the same time, the next day I was due to go away camping with my family. I tried to explain to my Grandmother how to give Bubba, (the cockatoo) the medicine but she couldn't read the measurements on the syringe well enough and told me she couldn't do it. Well I was madly trying to think of what to do when I thought "Hey, I'll take him with me!" So I did. Bubba spent the next 5 days either sitting on my shoulder or arm in front of a fireplace, or else he was tucked into my jacket. He slept in my jacket which I wore to bed (bed was the back of my ute). And although it was cold outside both of us were nice and warm under the doona. I woke up one morning to find he had made his way down to my feet and was nibbling my socks. He's better than an alarm clock! When we got back home, his feathers were very grey which can be a sign of Beak and Feather but in this case was from sitting in front of the fire, so i gave him a bath. The next day it was back to the vet to test for Beak and Feather. They took one look at him and very surprised they said "He's fine, we don't need to do the test." And he is now over the infection completely. I admit that body heat wasn't the way I was planning on keeping Bubba warm, and I definately wasn't planning on taking him on vacation with me. But I'm glad I did, he's great company. NOTE:
