Loving Hands
By Deana Latta-Poole

Deana & her husband Steve are the proud parents of 1 son, 2 daughters, and the caretakers of a whole zoo of animals. 1 dog, 3 cats, 2 birds, 2 lizards, 1 tarantula, 1 black bear hamster, and 1 goldfish. (Whew!) If they rescue any more animals, the humans will have to move out! They reside in the Windsor Ontario area.

I had a name, and a family. I was a beautiful strawberry and white coloured male cat. I was never neutered, and as a result, always wanting out to do what nature called me to do. I never meant to get hit by that car, but I was young, and really didn't know any better. I will never get the chance to know any better...

The impact of the car had me unconscious, lying helpless in the middle of the road. Cars just kept passing me by, until finally a gentleman in a van stopped to move my still form from the road. To allow me a little dignity. The man had tears in his eyes as he moved me off to the side of the road. The man was then amazed to discover that I was still alive. I could see he was puzzled as to what to do next. He sat stroking me for a few moments before he picked me up and carried me into the warmth of his van.

A few minutes later I am carried into the mans home where his wife and daughter are. The wife runs to get blankets and towels. Then I am placed on the table upon a pillow and covered. This is not my home and these are not my people. The woman places a warm water bottle next to my body. It feels good and she begins to rub and stroke my fur. I am in another place and what little strength I summon - causes me to purr incessantly. The woman is reduced to tears and quiet sobs as she rubs and strokes me. The little girl is gently mopping my face with a towel. She says if she wants to be a vet when she grows up, she must get used to sights such as this. I'm afraid she's right.

I have other visitors - feline. They come upon the woman's lap to sniff me. One takes a very long time and even licks my brow. I can sense her sadness. She stays with the family as they care for me.

Alas, I am mortally injured, but these people have made me so comfortable, I am still purring as I lapse into a coma. My time on this earth will not be long now. I know I am not alone. I am safe and warm, and loved... The loving hands continue stroking me long after I have expired...

A message to all cat owners; Please have your cats spayed or neutered. If you must allow us outdoors - accompany us on a leash. Or, consider having us become indoor cats. We may not like this at first, but we will adjust to this, (appreciate it even) and live longer, healthier lives as a result.
