Calcuim Oxalate Crystals are one toxic component of the Narcissus spp, which include Daffodils and Hyacinths. Upon ingestion of the flowers or leaves (non-bulb parts of the plant), the calcium oxalate crystals irritate the oral mucosa and can cause increased drooling and oral pain. Another toxic component, alkaloids (toxic potential yet to be discovered), is found in the bulbs. Upon eating the bulbs, animals may experience vomiting, diarrhea, and rarely, death.
Fall is the times to plant bulbs - be sure to keep bulbs of all plants away from pets!
