PRESS RELEASE - Pharmacia: Ambitious Growth Planned For Companion Animal Business
Received 07-23-01

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (July 15, 2001) - Pharmacia selected the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) annual convention as the venue for introducing its companion animal business to the veterinary community.

Pharmacia, formed through the merger of Pharmacia & Upjohn and Monsanto in 2000, continued to reinforce the companion animal business unit with the appointment of Julia Stephanus as Global Marketing Director in Fall 2000.

Today, the company hopes to continue to build the companion animal franchise through a combination of organic growth and strategic product acquisitions.

Speaking at an event called The Art of Good Medicine, Stephanus talked about the company's heritage and its next generation commitment to growing its presence in the companion animal business.

"The Upjohn Company had a rich heritage of developing innovative, quality pharmaceutical products and health care programs," she said. "We have always been a company committed to bringing patients and doctors together to discuss health care options, so people could receive the best possible care."Pharmacia Animal Health hopes to retain the rich heritage of Upjohn, add to that the new elements needed to bolster the business, and in the end build a new company that combines the strengths of the old and the new."

An artistic legacy
The company's long-standing commitment is evident in the company's art collection and innovative advertising campaign that ran from the 1940s through the 1960s. At that time, The Upjohn Company purchased original art from American painters, including Norman Rockwell, and developed a series of advertisements around the art. Each ad was comparable to a deskside chat with a physician, and subjects ranged from old age to pregnancy to mental illness.

The Art of Good Medicine event is one of the themes Stephanus is using to connect the old company with the new. "Today we are unveiling the new Pharmacia Animal Health company to companion animal veterinarians. Pharmacia is committed to using the strengths of our heritage - innovative technology, quality products, and tools to help doctors educate clients - along with the vast resources of the new organization to build a top-tier companion animal business."

She also noted that at the 1962 AVMA annual convention, The Upjohn Company unveiled "The Veterinarian," a Norman Rockwell painting later distributed as reprints to veterinary clinics across the country.

New products, new innovations Pharmacia, she pointed out, is committed to bringing new products and innovations to the industry. This is evident by the company's 5,600 scientists worldwide and $2.5 billion annual research investment.

"The research emphasis today is in taking leads from work done in the human health side of our business and determining which may have application to animal health," said Tony Benitz, vice president of animal health research and development at Pharmacia. "This enables the company to capitalize on its phenomenal research investment. The key products due to come on stream in the next five years were born of work carried out in Pharmacia's human health division."

This, he went on to explain, does not mean all products will simply reflect work done on the human side, but it will enable the company to use its research leadership in areas such as pain management, anti-infectives and cancer to develop applicable products for animals.

Partnering with veterinarians
In addition to product development, Pharmacia recognizes the importance of partnering with veterinarians to educate pet owners on disease awareness, treatment options, proper administration of treatment, and many other health care issues.

"Here at AVMA, we are introducing a new program for veterinarians called HEAL(SM), Help Educate Animal Lovers," Stephanus said. "It is a wellness and education program that provides veterinarians with resources and communication tools to build knowledge and awareness of pet health concerns among pet owners."

Education programs are important since pet owners trust their veterinarian to provide quality care to their pet, and this is an important responsibility for veterinarians. The HEAL(SM) program is just one of the many programs that Pharmacia offers to strengthen the education and communication process between veterinarians and pet owners. Together, Pharmacia Animal Health and veterinarians are educating pet owners and improving the quality of life for pets.

Pharmacia Animal Health, a division of Pharmacia Corporation, is dedicated to developing products that promote the health of pets and livestock throughout the world. Pharmacia Corporation (NYSA:PHA) is a top-tier global pharmaceutical company with a leading agricultural subsidiary. Pharmacia's innovative medicines and other products save lives and enhance health and wellness. Pharmacia's 59,000 people work together with many diverse stakeholders to bring these benefits to people around the world, and to create new health solutions for the future.
