Vet School Diaries

True Life Veterinary School

By , About.com Guide

Ahhh - the dream of getting into vet school. What classes should you take? What school should you apply to? What are the average chances of being accepted? So many questions to consider!

All of these questions and more are answered, examined, and discussed in the active Pre-Vet / Career forum on this site. You are invited to stop in and see what we are talking about this week.

One constant in the Pre-Vet / Career forum is the Vet School Diary project. This was the idea of current Cornell veterinary student, Joanne. She wanted to start her diary as she started her journey through veterinary school. Joanne is now a 3rd year veterinary student for Fall of 2003. Here is a quick retrospective from the week before vet school, first days of freshman year, and first days of junior year for Joanne.

Joanne - Cornell Veterinary School

One week prior to veterinary school
"Sometimes I wonder when this will all really feel real. I've done all the things I was supposed to do up until now. I have the apartment, the car, even a few scattered textbooks and a stethoscope. But to think I'll be starting veterinary school next week? That just doesn't seem right somehow.

Life in Ithaca so far, is pretty uneventful."

Second day of freshman year
"So two full days of vet school are down, and already I am 1) behind in work and 2) don't have any time to catch up.

Don't worry. It's not that it's all that bad. There's a lot to do and learn, but a lot of my issues have more to do with getting into an organized schedule and learning what's going to work for me. It's a matter of figuring out what it is that I need to know and not dwelling on what I don't need to know."

Junior year begins
"It's easy to see how the novelty of vet school has worn away. I've already been back in class for 1.5 weeks, and haven't written a word yet. But mainly that's because there's not too much excitement going on anymore! Block Vb (the official last block of classes before clinics!!!!) is where I'm at now. But it is so incredibly tedious. We started with Urology, and began Hepatology today. Our combined exam is on Thursday, with an in-class component and a take home component. It's the same old story of power-point lectures, sitting in the lecture hall (freezing since they keep it about the same temperature as a meat locker), and grinding through all the notes."

Of course, a lot happened in between too! Stop in to see what's next for Joanne.

And now we have a brand new veterinary student to introduce!

Yvonne - Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Medicine

Just starting out!
"Hi there everyone. My name is Yvonne Rae and I currently live in North Yorkshire, England. In a couple of weeks time I will be moving to Edinburgh, Scotland to study Veterinary Medicine at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Medicine.

To my knowledge I have always wanted to go into Veterinary Medicine (with the exception o a brief period in which I wanted to do catering but I've put that down to temporary madness!)."

Hopefully Yvonne will not be too overwhelmed by the rigors of veterinary school and will have time to keep us up to date on veterinary school in England!

A big thank you to the diary writers and all who participate in the forums and make them a great place for sharing resources and information!

Take Note
If you are a veterinary student or veterinary technology student and would like to have your own Vet School Diary in the forum, please vetmedicine.guide@about.com let me know. I would also like to open this up to current veterinarians and veterinary technicians -- if you would like to post a diary regarding daily veterinary duties, please vetmedicine.guide@about.com drop me a line.
