Sending unwelcome guests away can be a delicate maneuver – particularly when the visitors are invisibly positioned around the house and in the coats of the family pets!
Several steps can help pet owners to rid their homes of fleas, ticks and other uninvited houseguests:
Clean, mop and vacuum the home to wipe out immature fleas and their food sources.
Wash pet’s bedding each week with a detergent and dry on high heat.
Check pets regularly for fleas and “flea dirt,” the feces of adult fleas, with a flea comb. When fleas are detected, treat the pet and environment (bedding, carpet, furniture) with flea and tick products to kill fleas and prevent eggs and larvae from developing.
Check pets and people in the home for ticks after spending time outdoors. Remember that ticks flourish in wooded and grassy areas. Remove ticks with fine-point tweezers, then wash hands thoroughly.
Mow lawns frequently and remove brush, tall grasses, leaves and debris to make the area less hospitable for ticks.
Use flea and tick repellent on pets, in the home, and in other areas to keep pests away. Read labels carefully and use as directed.
