How to Take Care of Torn Toenails

Most dog owners have experienced a torn toenail in a dog. This How To describes how to take care of an injured nail until it can be examined by a veterinarian.

1. Depending on the nature of injury, the torn toenail may be painful. Care should be taken to avoid getting bit. A muzzle is advisable.
2. Using a nail clipper, remove the broken end of nail.
3. Gently wash the area with warm water and a mild skin cleanser or soap.
4. Apply gentle but firm pressure with a clean piece of gauze or cloth.
5. If there is a nail 'stump' visible, apply an antibiotic ointment to the remaining toenail and place a light wrap.
6. It is advisable to have the injured toenail examined by your veterinarian.
   

Tips:

1. Shaving alum or a styptic pencil is wise to have on hand to control bleeding. Both of these items can be purchased over the counter at a drugstore.
2. Keep your dog's nails trimmed regularly to reduce chances of traumatic nail injuries.
3. If the dog is uncooperative (i.e. there is a danger of getting bitten), leave the toenail alone until you can see your veterinarian.
