Pet Food Recall Update: Rat Poison Found In Contaminated Food

Friday March 23, 2007
According to a press release from the Associated Press released a short time ago, rat poison has been identified as a toxic agent in the Menu Foods pet food recall. At this time, officials have not released details about the exact nature of the chemical found. Wheat gluten, an agent used to thicken canned food "gravy" has been suspect from the start. Wheat gluten itself will not cause illness or kidney damage (individuals allergic to wheat may have signs related to the specific allergy). Officials say that the poison have been used on wheat imported from China, which is illegal to use in the United States.

Special thanks to Franny Syufy, About.com Guide to Cats for alerting me to this latest Associated Press News.

Update from ABC News: The poison has been identified as aminopterin, used as a cancer drug in the US.
