Onions / SoraZG on FlickrThe icky things pets eat is a common topic on this site. Not all of the toxic foods are 'icky' though. Foods loved by humans (chocolate, grapes and raisins, and macadamia nuts) may pose health risks to pets.

Here is one more human food to add to the list: onions.

Here is a recent viewer submission from Anita:

"My 9 year old miniature Schaunzer ingested a small bottle of onion flakes left on the counter. Cat knocked it off, my dog ate most of the bottle, had a blood transfusion today but still a critical situation. Put everything back in the cabinets please. Pray that Scooby recovers. His vet has been wonderful and Scooby is the first "onion toxicity" patient. They quickly responded and he's under amazing care."  More viewer stories about icky things pets eat.

Learn more about onion toxicity from guest Author Dr. Jonathan J. Kreissler, a veterinary internist in Miami, Florida. Dr. Kreissler discusses a case of onion toxicity in a terrier.
