Pet Food Recalls / Janet Tobiassen Crosby DVMBased on reports filed with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by veterinarians and pet owners, a warning has been issued for chicken jerky products (dog treats) imported from China. According to the FDA alert: dogs who have consumed chicken jerky strips or treats "should be monitored for any or all of the following signs that may occur within hours to days of feeding the products: decreased appetite; decreased activity; vomiting; diarrhea, sometimes with blood; increased water consumption and/or increased urination."

Most of the affected dogs have recovered, but a few have died. If your dog exhibits any of these signs after eating these products, they should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Despite "extensive chemical and microbial testing" by the FDA, a contaminant or causative agent has not been identified in these products. If you suspect that your pet has been harmed by these product or any other foods or treats, please report your findings to the FDA. This helps track incidences of problems and possible trends to investigate.
