Just about every one who lives with a dog or cat has experienced cleaning up after diarrhea and has had questions about causes and ways to manage. For animals that are overall feeling "OK" and not lethargic and still have an appetite, cutting back on food (reducing gastrointestinal irritation) and trying bland foods or another diet is fine.
If your pet is not feeling well however, a trip to the vet is the first thing to do, especially for the young and old pets who are often more sensitive. For all pets, annual stool checks for parasites (or more often, depending on lifestyle) are in order.
